Artist Statement, Bernd Kommnick, 2026
My work builds spatial systems through repetition, reduction, and the structural
transformation of material. Using folding, segmentation, and modular construction, I create floor installations that convert surface into volume and alter the spatial order of architecture.
The installations operate as spatial drawings. Linear and grid structures are translated
into physical arrangements that activate the floor as a field. Tensions emerge between stability and shift, weight and void, surface and mass.
Unlike the closed object of minimal sculpture, these systems remain open. Their meaning
unfolds in relation to the site and through movement. Perception is embodied rather than frontal—formed through walking, crossing, and reorientation within the space.
